ERZGEBIRGE REGION

The Erzgebirge Region, in the Ore Mountains near the German border with the Czech Republic, is home to a wonderful array of wooden Christmas products. Initially the area was a hub of mining, but by 1750 it was also growing as a producer of Wooden Toys. Much of what was depicted in the toys was based around the lives of the people from the area.

So too did the lives of the population result in the fantastic wooden Christmas decorations we have today. The area was a mining area and in the winter months the miners left before the sun rose and came home after it had set, meaning they lived almost entirely in the dark during these months. Candle Pyramids and Arches were created as a source of light, and would be placed in the windows of the homes, allowing the miners to see light as they were returning home.

Today the traditions continue in the region and there are numerous skilled crafts people plying their trade, bringing their visions to the world.
